While the Sellaronda and Seceda dominate the brochures, the true magic of Val Gardena lies in the quiet corners where time seems to stand still. If you want to escape the crowds and connect with the Ladin soul of S. Cristina, these are the three spots we tell our friends to visit.
1. The Path of the Legend (Troi de l'Ega) Most people take the main road to get around, but there is a stunning forest path that connects S. Cristina to our neighboring villages. It follows the stream and features wood-carved installations that tell the ancient legends of our mountains. It’s flat, shaded, and perfect for a recovery day or a romantic evening walk.
- Local Tip: Look for the small wooden fountains along the way; the water is crystal clear and perfectly safe to drink.
2. The S. Giacomo Church (San Giacomo) This is the oldest church in the valley, and it’s perched high above S. Cristina. You can’t reach it by car, which keeps it peaceful. The walk from Garni Cir takes about 45 minutes through larch forests. When you arrive, you’ll find the most iconic view of the Sassolungo, framed by the stone walls of a church that has stood there since the 12th century.
- Why it’s a secret: Most tourists only see it from far away in the valley. Standing in its shadow at noon, hearing only the distant cowbells, is a transformative experience.
3. The Tervela Waterfall Hidden right in plain sight near the center of S. Cristina is the Tervela waterfall. While everyone is heading to the lifts, you can take a short 20-minute hike to the base of this powerful cascade. The air here is rich in oxygen and naturally cool—a perfect "natural spa" on a hot July afternoon.
Why stay in S. Cristina? Unlike the busier hubs, S. Cristina remains a living village. When you stay at Garni Cir, you aren't just a tourist; you are a guest in our home. We invite you to slow down, take the forest path, and discover why we never want to leave this valley.
